Who Gets Acne?
People no matter the their race or age get acne. But it’s is most common in teens and young adults. When acne appears during the teenage years, it is more common in males. Acne can continue into adulthood, and often when it does.. it is more common in women.The 7 Types of Acne
Acne causes several types of lesions or pimples. They are refer to enlarged or plugged hair follicles as comedones. Which includes these types:
- Whiteheads- plugged hair follicles that stay beneath the skin and produce a white bump.
- Blackheads- Plugged follicles that reach the surface on the skin and open up. They look black on the skin surface because the air discolors the sebum(Oil) not because they are dirty.
- Papules- Inflamed lesions that usually appear as small, pink bumps on the skin and can be tender to the touch.
- Pustules or (Pimples)- Papules topped by white or yellow pus- filled lesions that may be red at the base.
- Nodules- Large, painful solid lesions that are logged deep within the skin.
- Severe Nodular Acne-sometimes called Cystic Acne) Deep, painful , pus filled lesions.
Causes of Acne
- Excess or high production of oil in the pores.
- Buildup of dead skin cells in the pores.
- Growth of bacteria in the pores.
These Factors may increase your risk for developing acne.
- Hormones- This is basically an increase in androgens, which are male sex hormones , may lead to acne. This increase happens in boys and girls typically during puberty and cause the sebaceous glands to enlarge and make more sebum. Hormonal changes related to pregnancy can also cause acne.
- Family History- If your parents suffered with acne.. you’re more than likely to inherit acne.
- Medications- Certain medications, that contain hormones, corticosteroids, lithium can cause acne.
- Age- People of all ages and race can get acne. But it’s more common in teens.
Factors that can make Acne Worse:
- Poor Diet
- Stress
- Pressure from helmets, tight clothes, backpacks.
- Environmental irritations, Pollutants and high humidity.
- Squeezing or picking at pimples or blemishes.
- Scrubbing your skin too hard
Here’s some ingredients that can help control acne: Benzoyl Peroxide, Tea tree oil, Retinol, Niacinamide, Salicylic Acid, Glycolic acid, Lactic acid.
Using a Moisturizer is a must regardless of Acne, oily skin. Not using a moisturizer leads to dehydrated skin. Which makes your skin barrier prone to excessive dryness and acne worse.
